The Quest for the Sapphire Amidst Six Precious Stones’

The University of Kelaniya Gavel currently preparing itself to build the ideal platform to display the best of public speaking talent of the contestants of all state universities in Sri Lanka at ‘Best Speaker 2015’, the All Island Inter University Best Speaker Contest organized by the club for the 11th Consecutive year. The Grand Finale of this prestigious event will take place at the Sri Dharmaloka Convocation Hall of the University of Kelaniya on the  15th  of October 2015.

The Semi Final round of the contest was held at the University premises on the  4th of October 2015. The twenty one semi finalists faced a decisive round to enter into the Finals. The Gavel Club conducted a special workshop for the semifinalists to help them face the contest successfully. The workshop was held on the 1st of October 2015 at the Career Guidance Unit of the UniversityIt was conducted by Mr. Samuel Lenin, a renowned Toastmaster of the Serendib Toastmasters Club. The workshop was very successful and the participants were trained to face the contest with much confidence to shine at the Finals.

The University of Kelaniya Gavel Club was able to complete two successful rounds of this contest with the selection of the six dazzling finalists. The Organizing Committee of the Club is now striving with their utmost potential to crate the stage for the finalists to shine in their best possible ways at the Finals.

Hiruni Niwunhella, Chrishari De Alwis, Himansa Herath and Amalini Fernando from the University of Kelaniya, Kaushalya Batawala from the UIniversity of Moratuwa and Dushanthi Weerasekara from the University of Colombo have been chosen as the dazzling finalists of the contest. It is crystal clear that the quest for the Sapphire is perceived already as a tough task according to the shine reflected by these precious stones.                                                                                       .

The University of Kelaniya Gavel Clubas three main goals in the agenda. They are, to improve the public speaking skills of the undergraduates, to enhance their communication skills in English and thirdly, and most importantly, to improve the leadership skills of the undergraduates. The club is very proud of its successful journey so far in the country as the first ever Gavel Club to have been established in South Asia.

The Gavel Club would like to extend an open invitation to the public be a part of an audience comprising of University academics, Toastmasters, Undergraduates from the different universities of Sri Lanka to witness ‘Best Speaker 2015’ on the  15th of October which will surely be a mesmerizing experience.
