”Unleash Yourself Phase V” School Workshop Series

The University of Kelaniya Gavel Club, constantly aims at improving communication and leadership skills of undergraduates but, taking their objectives to the next level, the Club annually organizes the “Unleash Yourself” project for the school community.

The Unleash Yourself project consists of the Inter School Best Speaker Contest and School Workshops on public speaking and leadership. This year, under the Phase V of Unleash Yourself, the club conducted five workshops in various schools in the country.

At Visaka Vidyalaya, Sapugaskanda

Workshop I – Visaka Vidyalaya, Sapugaskanda

The workshop in Visaka Vidyalaya Sapugaskanda was held on the 2nd of February 2016 with the participation of more than 120 students. Gaveliers, accompanied by Lecturer Mr. Duleep Anuranga conducted the program focusing on bringing out the public speakers, leaders and brilliant communicators in the students. Students studying in English Medium from grades 6 to 11 were present at the workshop. The program was arranged by the teacher-in-charge of the English Circle, Mrs. Athula Liyanagunawardene.

Workshop II – Holy Cross College, Gampaha

The workshop at Holy Cross College Gampaha was held on the 15th of February 2016. More than 80 students including English Medium students from grade 10 and upwards, senior and junior prefects of the college participated in this event. The program was planned with sessions on leadership, speech, creativity, and most importantly education. The students enjoyed the company of the Gaveliers and interacted very well. The program was arranged by senior English teacher Ms. Sujani Karunarathne.

Workshop III – Vajira Sri Children’s Home, Kotte

Workshop III was a special workshop, as it was held in Kotte Vajira Sri Children’s Home. The Children’s Home, established in 1983 currently houses 116 children of shattered families, and victims of war and tsunami. This workshop was held on the 21st of April 2016 with the objective of providing a helping hand to the children in need, by improving their leadership and communication skills. The workshop included a leadership session where aspects of leadership were explained along with games and entertaining activities, a technical session with speech demonstrations and creative sessions. Current Gaveliers as well as past Gaveliers participated in this workshop which was organized under the guidance of the Chief Incumbent, Rev. Dr. Hunupolagama Vajira Sri Nayaka Thero, the executive director of the home.

At Vajira Sri Children’s Home, Kotte

Workshop IV – Holy Cross College, Gampaha

Workshops IV and V were conducted in the schools of the winners of the Inter School Best Speaker Contest 2016. Workshop IV was held in Holy Cross College Gampaha; the school of Sandunlekha Ekanayake, the winner of the Senior Category of the contest. It was held on the 3rd of May 2016 with the participation of students of grades 6 and upwards. After different sessions on leadership qualities under the theme ‘Go Green’, technical sessions discussing the art of prepared and impromptu speeches, and creative sessions, the Gaveliers conducted a special session to introduce Gavel clubs. The program was arranged by senior English teacher Ms. Sujani Karunarathne.

Workshop V – Royal College, Colombo

The final workshop of Unleash Yourself Phase V was conducted in the school of Suneragiri Liyanage the winner of the Junior category in the Inter School Best Speaker Contest 2016. The workshop was held on the 3rd of May 2016 for Gaveliers of the Royal College Gavel Club. The program consisted of similar sessions as in workshop IV. After elaborative sessions of leadership, and public speaking, the  students found the courage to stand confidently on the stage and completed the activities assigned to them successfully. The day’s program was arranged by teacher-in-charge of the Gavel Club of Royal College Colombo, Mrs. Nilmini Jayasekara.

University of Kelaniya Gavel Club marked the end of another venture to promote public speaking and develop the communication and leadership skills of the youth. The Club is determined to travel wherever it takes to give an exposure for young speakers to learn public speaking precisely and practically and be true leaders.
