Events

The Gavel Club of University of Kelaniya organizes various events to develop leadership, language and communication skills of the members as well as of other undergraduates.
The four main events organized by the club are;

  • The All Island Inter University Best Speaker Contest
  • The Intra University Best Speaker Contest
  • Inter School Best Speaker Contest
  • "Unleash Yourself" Workshops Series

Other than these events, the club organizes Inductions as well as Orientation programmes. It also organizes Awurudu celebrations musical events and annual trips.

Best Speaker Contest

The All Island Inter University Best Speaker Contests have been held successfully so far. It began in 2004 as an initial project and was extended further in 2005 with many improvements throughout the past couple of years. The undergraduates of University of Kelaniya have been able to gain much fame by being victorious in most of the contests and the event has also provided the chance for the contestants of other universities to compete for the title.

The Intra University Best Speaker Contests have also been organized with much energy and dedication of the Gaveliers. IUBSC 2014 was held last year for the 10th consecutive year.

Intra University Best Speaker's Contest 2004

This initial project was supposed to give us the much-needed momentum to move ahead. Its intentions were well met. The prime objectives were to declare the club as a beneficial club to the university community and to promote the club within the university. Intra University Best Speaker's Contest 2004 paved us the way to show the students the art and benefits of public speaking.

All Island Inter University Best Speaker's Contest 2005

Due to the success of the Intra University Best Speaker's Contest 2004 and to promote the art of public speaking, our club decided to organize the 1st ever All Island Inter University Best speaker's Contest in English medium,- “All Island Inter University Best Speaker's Contest 2005” which further expanded our horizons.

Winner : Ms. Seshika Fernando (University of Colombo)

First runners up : Ms. Samudra Karunaratne (University of Kelaniya)

Contest was not held in 2006.

All Island Inter University Best Speaker's Contest 2007

After holding a successful “All Island Inter University Best Speaker's Contest in year 2005, our club organized “All Island Inter University Best Speaker's Contest 2007”. That was the 2nd All Island Inter University Best Speaker's Contest in Sri Lankan history.

Inter Department Best Speaker's Contest 2007

After holding a successful intra university best speaker's contest in the year 2004 the club organized another event that gave the university students the opportunity to further improve their communication and presentation skills. The name of the event was changed with the objective of giving much recognition to the event and gaining increased participation of the university students and the club moved ahead with the title Inter Department Best Speaker's Contest.

Inter Department Best Speaker's Contest 2009

Due to the success of the last All Island Inter University Best speaker's Contest, the club was geared by more commitment and enthusiasm by the members to organize an event of such magnitude in this year as well. Initiatively the club organized the Intra University Best Speaker's contest in search of new recruits to take part in the grand event to be held in May. Gaveliers did achieve their purpose and they were able to pick the best and it was for sure a memorable event for everyone who participated.
Gaveliers felt sense of pride to express that this year it recorded the highest number of participants in the event's history representing all 31 departments in the University of Kelaniya.

Intra University Best Speaker Contest 2014

IUBSC 2014 was the 10th Intra University Best Speaker contest organized by the Gavel Club. The event was graced by the chief guest; Vice Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya, Professor Sunanda Madduma Bandara, and the guests of honor; Professor J. B. Disanayake, and Honorable Chandra Ekanayake.

All Island Inter University Best Speaker 2015 was completed with unparalleled splendour and fame. The event was graced by the presence of the distinguished guests of honor; Professor Carlo Fonseka and Doctor Chris Nonis.

Inter School Best Speaker Contest

The Inter School Best Speaker Contest is the first ever public speaking school contest organized by a Gavel Club in Sri Lanka. Started in 2014, the contest creates a platform for the school community to excel in public speaking. The contest is a unique experience for competitors as they participate in a one of the most competitive contests in the island. The ISBSC is organized under the “Unleash Yourself” project of the club.

Inter School Best Speaker Contest 2014

As the pioneers of "Best Speaker" contests, the club created a milestone in presenting the Inter School Best Speaker Contest 2014, the first ever speech contest for the school community. The event was an immense success and was graced by the presence of the Vice Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya, Professor Sunanda Madduma Bandara.

"Unleash Yourself" - Workshop Series

Furthermore, workshops have been held to coach the members as well as the undergraduates to improve their soft skills and build self-confidence. These workshops have been held since 2006 starting with a Business Communication workshop. Other workshops like ‘Leadership through Gavel Clubs’ and “Undergraduates to the Corporate World’ have fulfilled the club’s intentions.
The major workshop series of the club; ‘Unleash yourself’ was completed successfully in its 4th phase this year. It was designed to improve the communication and leadership skills of the school community. The latest workshop series took place on the 29th and 30th of January at Sudharma M V, Sangamitta Balika Vidhyalaya and ST Aloysius’ M V of the Galle Educational Division.
