Once a Gavelier, always a Gavelier…
is the tagline and the favourite opening of every Gavelier in University of Kelaniya which brings a pleasant humble smile along with self-pride. Being the first South Asian Gavel Club, it has nurtured many next-level speakers to the world.
Year 2021, a year filled with difficulties, different settings yet challenging. Also, the Gavel Calendar reminded us to welcome newbies who are willing to share their stories to the world. The harsh yet challenging year formed barriers for the warm welcome with gentle handshakes but, the Gavel Club of University of Kelaniya could not make the Gavel Orientation 2021 dry as dust.
Rather than the on-site setting, the zoom platform was utilised to provide the maximum; the organising team of Gavel orientation 2021 put forth a podium for all new members. Late night meetings, days and days of commitment finally resulted in an orientation with 850+ newbies.
It is the 11th of July, 2021 “We warmly welcome everyone and appreciate your initial step towards a priceless journey with Gavel”. Right from the start, the session moved away from an ordinary zoom session. The moderators showcased the potential of the club and notified on the club’s forthcoming events on how they can expand their skills, network and talents with gavel. Not only that, within the Orientation we were able to introduce CC modules, a prepared speech and an evaluation elaborating the hidden luminary in gavel family.
The conclusion of the event was dressed with informal chit-chats and past experiences of Past Gaveliers proving that, no matter what the age is, the Gavel bond is ever-lasting. Yet another day of Gavel calendar terminated but with delightful memories. Now, the Gavel family tree is growing and every heart has that resonation thought, “Once a Gavelier is always a Gavelier”…
The Gavel Club of University of Kelaniya has gained much reputation by becoming the first ever Gavel Club in South Asia. The main intention of the Gavel Club is to help its members to improve their communication, language and leadership skills.
