University of Gavel Club has always thrived to mold its members into outstanding orators. This was never a challenge but rather a committed mission all members readily participated before the pandemic. However, with the recent change of events due to the prevailing pandemic the club had to seek novel ways to perpetuate the mission of molding outstanding speakers. First off, the club decided to unite the gavel family weekly via Zoom. Gradually more innovative measures were put into action in a way the new challenges and the club’s objectives complemented each other. ‘Speechathon’ is one such measure.
At a ‘Speechathon’ around 10 speakers deliver prepared speeches, which are evaluated by 10 different evaluators. The speakers prepare their speeches with the assistance of the mentors and perform at ‘Speechathon’ with great practice and confidence. The specialty of ‘Speechathon’ is that it cultivates skills in both public speaking and evaluating many members during one session. It is a highly effective initiative taken by the club solely for the educational purposes of the club.
The Gavel Club of University of Kelaniya has gained much reputation by becoming the first ever Gavel Club in South Asia. The main intention of the Gavel Club is to help its members to improve their communication, language and leadership skills.
